Large amounts of dust and sand blowing in on strong winds from Mongolia and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region have swept large areas in the northwest and north since Wednesday, driving air pollution indexes to hazardous levels and lowering visibility.
5月3日以來，來自蒙古和內(nèi)蒙古自治區(qū)的強風帶著大量沙塵席卷西北和北方大部分地區(qū)，致使空氣污染指數(shù)達到嚴重級別，能見度下降。
沙塵暴（sandstorm）影響面積占我國國土六分之一，多地空氣質(zhì)量爆表（exceed the upper limit of the air quality index），沙塵過程影響范圍和強度，均創(chuàng)下今年以來之最。專家表示，造成如此大范圍沙塵天氣的原因——是由于近期北方地區(qū)降水少（less precipitation）、氣溫高（high temperature），以及風速大（strong wind）、沙塵輸送強（large-scale transport of dust）等。
PM2.5是指大氣中直徑小于或等于2.5微米的顆粒物（particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter），可直接進入人體的肺泡（alveoli of the lungs），也稱為可入肺顆粒物。它的直徑還不到人的頭發(fā)絲粗細的1/20。雖然PM2.5只是地球大氣成分中含量很少的組分，但它對空氣質(zhì)量和能見度（air quality and visibility）等有重要的影響。與較粗的大氣顆粒物相比，PM2.5粒徑小，富含大量的有毒、有害物質(zhì)（toxic and hazardous matters）且在大氣中的停留時間長、輸送距離遠，因而對人體健康和大氣環(huán)境質(zhì)量的影響更大。
PM10是可吸入顆粒物（inhalable particulate matter），一般名稱上講可吸入顆粒物指的是PM10，就是說這個空氣中顆粒物的直徑從空氣動力學來講直徑大小是十個微米，是能夠吸入呼吸道的，從上呼吸道，通過聲門能夠到下呼吸道，所以它叫可吸入顆粒物PM10。
